For Our Future’s Sake, We Must Kill The Bill

Tomorrow, thousands of people — including Breakthrough Party members from across the country — will take to the streets to protest the anti-democratic Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill.

This dangerous piece of legislation threatens our right to organise, to dissent and to disrupt. It limits the freedoms of ordinary people in order to protect the corrupt establishment. It empowers the police to intensify their harassment of Black and Gypsy, Romany and Traveller people.

If the Tories had any confidence in their own ability to solve society’s problems and improve people’s lives, they wouldn’t need to pass such crudely repressive measures. But since they have no real answers to the crises of our time, they have chosen to criminalise resistance instead.

At this frightening crossroads for our society, the official ‘opposition’ has been unforgivably timid in its response to the Government’s agenda. The Labour Party’s failure to alert the public to the consequences of the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill makes it complicit in Britain’s authoritarian turn.

If this Bill does become law, we must render it unenforceable by continuing to organise in our communities, workplaces and on our streets. The fight may be long, but together we really can Kill the Bill and build a truly democratic society in which the freedoms of ordinary people are cherished and protected.
