Community • Democracy Transform newsletter 3rd July 2024 30th November 2024 Welcome to issue five of the Transform newsletter. Polling day is almost here. Don’t vote Labour, vote for Transform and the left candidates that we’re endorsing. And thank you to everyone who’s played a part in their amazing campaigns. Candidate profile: Pamela Fitzpatrick “My name is Pamela Fitzpatrick, and I am fighting for a world based on the needs of the many, not the greed of a few. “I’m a trade unionist, and I’ve lived, worked and raised my sons in Harrow for over two decades, and now I’m standing as an Independent to give the people of Harrow West a real choice over the near-identical policies of Labour and Conservative – over funding of the NHS and public services, privatization, worker’s rights, and the defining moral issue of our era, the genocide in Gaza – to give them a voice and hope that tomorrow can be better than today.” Find out more at Pamela’s website and X/Twitter page. Sunak and Starmer tie the knot Like many couples, they bicker occasionally, but they’re so enamoured of one another that they even copy each other’s policies. So Transform decided that it was time that Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer got married. You can watch the ‘wedding’ here. In all seriousness, many voters no longer perceive a real difference between the Tories and Labour. The two parties are meant to be adversaries, but they seem to agree on most things that matter. That locks the working class out of our political system, and makes building a real alternative an urgent necessity. Transform’s election candidates In addition to endorsing many candidates on our Left List, Transform is fielding three candidates in this election. In Liverpool Garston, Sam Gorst is running a tremendous campaign for Liverpool Community Independents (a constituent party of Transform), and is hopeful of slashing into Maria Eagle’s 31,000 majority. Rachel Maughan’s election video is out, and is being watched by residents in Bishop Auckland. Check it out here. And this is Brian Agar’s video for his campaign in Newton Aycliffe and Spennymoor. Throughout this election period, we’ve involved Transform members in developing our policy platform, running campaigning skills training, expanding our social media reach, launching the Transform podcast, and starting this newsletter to keep members and supporters better informed. The work that we’ve done in compiling our Left List and supporting Left List candidates has helped us build connections and laid a basis for future collaboration. Independent candidate for Warrington North Maddison Wheeldon says: “Beyond grateful for the endorsement from Transform – watching the left come together in solidarity has been so restoring.” If you are still watching from the side lines, now is the perfect time to join Transform and help build the socialist opposition to a right-wing Labour government. People’s Assemblies Some of you may have seen notices about assemblies being organised near you and wondered what these are, and what they can offer. A People’s Assembly is open to anyone to attend. It’s a safe, inclusive place where members of a community can discuss issues or make decisions collectively. Several Collective-backed independent candidates have been nominated by community assemblies, or have taken it on themselves to organise assemblies in their constituency. On Wednesday 17 July, people who’ve been involved in or inspired by community assemblies linked to independent candidates will converge for an all-day event in South London billed as the State Opening of a New House of the People. The hope is that this experiment in direct democracy could be the start of something bigger, For more information about People’s Assemblies, please read this article on our website. National march for Palestine We march again for Palestine this Saturday 6 July in central London. To be part of the Transform contingent, please sign up here.
